Southern Maryland Tri-County Community Action Community Action Committee, Inc. administers the federally funded Head Start Program in Charles County, Maryland to promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of low-income children and their families. 150 children are enrolled in our classrooms.
Head Start provides high-quality early childhood education services to preschoolers (children ages 3 to 5) and their families. Center-based services are provided Monday through Friday at two locations:
- Brawners Center
6655 Weaver Street
Indian Head, MD 20640
- J. Woodall Center
10515 Theodore Green Blvd #3
White Plains, MD 20695
Education
The goal of the education component is to ensure children receive a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate curriculum that addresses all areas of their developmental needs. The program includes individualized leaning plans and screening and referral for cognitive and social/emotional developmental disabilities.
Health Services
Attention is paid to the health needs of each child so that health issues do not interfere with learning and development. Health services provide review of medical health status, screenings for hearing and vision and parent education on good dental practices and the importance of dental exams and treatment.
Family and Community Partnerships
Parents are encouraged to become involved in all components of the program, including providing input into the curriculum, their child’s individual learning plan and the menus. Staff partner with parents to help set and achieve family goals, and to develop and implement parent activities, parent education, center activities/events and fundraisers.
